Migdal Ohr (“Tower of Light”) is Israel’s leading non-profit organization for children at risk, assisting individuals from across the religious and socio-economic spectrums with directed programming for people of all ages. Following graduation, many of Migdal Ohr’s students go on to serve in the IDF or participate in National Service, leading them towards lives as productive adults. Most notably, Migdal Ohr alumni are among Israel’s top doctors, lawyers, community leaders, business professionals, army generals, and Knesset members.

As this highly regarded organization approaches 50 years of groundbreaking results for addressing pressing social service needs, the leadership of the American Friends of Migdal Ohr (AFMO) views the appointment of a Chief Executive Officer (CEO) as a compelling opportunity to advance the organization at a turning point in its history.

This is a prime opportunity for the CEO to be the principal architect of the development program; one which supports the organization’s mission and programs, both current and future; a chance to leverage Migdal Ohr’s stellar achievements and reputation, and committed base of support to ensure the legacy for future generations of Israeli children at risk.

AFMO is seeking a CEO to lead the revenue-generation efforts of the organization. Background and Mission

Founded 45 years ago by Israel Prize Winner Rabbi Yitzchak Dovid Grossman, Migdal Ohr currently serves more than 12,000 orphaned, impoverished, abandoned, abused and new immigrant children across Israel at its three campuses and 160 youth clubs. Migdal Ohr provides indigent children (from birth to adulthood) with an outstanding education, a loving home, clothing, food, medical care, psychological counseling, and recreational activities.

Some of their programs include:
• Day Care Centers which provide tender, loving care to infants aged three months to three years old
• Kindergartens where pre-school age children get a proper start on the educational path
• Primary and Secondary school systems for boys and girls, with full dormitory facilities, laboratories, computer centers, libraries, and youth centers, where emphasis is placed on individual attention to each child's needs
• Prisoner rehabilitation programs in Israel's prisons. The recidivism rate among the "graduates" of Migdal Ohr's rehabilitation activities stands at about 10%, a sharp contrast to the 90% in the general prison population
• Occupational Training Center offering young adult education courses responsive to the requirements of government and industry. Courses fall into three categories:
o Occupational Diploma Courses
o Education extension courses
o After school enrichment programs

Founded in 1987, the mission of the American Friends of Migdal Ohr (AFMO) is to raise funds for, and awareness of, Migdal Ohr across the United States by highlighting the extraordinary lifesaving work. Led by a dedicated and passionate board, AFMO plays a crucial role in sustaining Rav Grossman’s vision of creating a child-centered, world class social service organization committed to making a difference in Israel’s future.

Tax deductible donations to AFMO contribute to innovative programs, construction of new buildings and scholarships, as well as fill critical gaps in funding not met by the Israeli government, tuition, grants, and other income.

Position



The American Friends of Migdal Ohr seek a proven dynamic, inspiring, and strategic leader with superior relationship skills and demonstrated success in building capacity and increasing revenue to become its Chief Executive Officer. The successful candidate must have an authentic passion for the mission, demonstrated success as an engaging fundraiser and be a highly articulate communicator skilled at making a compelling case for organization support.

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CEO is responsible for the overall functioning and health of the organization. The leadership seeks a CEO who will guide programs and activities that strengthen and expand the organization’s visibility and brand, fundraising, and partnership with Migdal Ohr in Israel. The CEO will be expected to analyze strategies, operations, and resources. The CEO will have the unique opportunity to chart a new course for continued growth and to recommend alternative plans and structures where appropriate. Among the leadership’s priorities are expanding AFMO and Migdal Ohr’s public visibility and reaching new communities of donors.

Working closely with the President and the Board of Trustees, the Chief Executive Officer will have the character, dexterity, and creative mindset to build on existing efforts and thoughtfully and intentionally pursue new opportunities for funding and engagement, increasing the depth and breadth of private individual and institutional support.

The Chief Executive Officer will diversify AFMO’s donor base, promoting Migdal Ohr to new audiences and prospects to generate interest and support for the organization, forging new relationships and leveraging current ones to achieve projected goals.

The CEO will possess exceptional planning and management skills. S/he must be a skillful staff leader, effective in recruiting, supervising and mentoring staff.

AFMO has a budget of $5+ million, with headquarters in New York City.

Key Responsibilities



As the chief professional officer of AFMO, the CEO will oversee and direct all management, programmatic and fund development programs. Specific duties include, but are not limited to:

Organizational Leadership
• Assume primary responsibility for all organizational operations and management.
• Partner with the Board, staff, and other stakeholders to create, build and engender an organization-wide culture of philanthropy
• Lead ongoing review of how operations and resources will support strategic directions and goals.
• Work with staff, the Treasurer, and the Board to develop annual operating budget.
• Work closely with the Treasurer and finance staff to monitor the financial status of AFMO, and to ensure that AFMO operates within its approved budget resources.
• Make sure that AFMO receives appropriate professional support and advice in all areas of legal, financial and tax issues.
• Ensure that AFMO complies with financial and tax regulations

Fundraising Strategy and Engagement
• Assess the philanthropic potential of the organization and create a multi-year development plan that will generate short-term results as well as sustainable long-term growth.
• Develop a strategic and collaborative fundraising program that includes ways to deepen and diversify the funding base; increase restricted and unrestricted funds from all constituencies; carefully monitor the costs associated with fundraising; and ensure that internal resources are appropriately utilized.
• Work closely with the Board and staff to expand their planning and participation, and to articulate the case for each program’s funding priorities; matching those with specific individual donor and foundation interests to ensure that philanthropy meets targeted needs and goals.
• Provide strategic oversight of AFMO’s CRM system and build a best practices environment to support development and external engagement efforts.
• Continually analyze fundraising activities and opportunities to ensure maximum productivity and results.

Marketing and Communications
• Lead the institutional and philanthropic marketing of the organization, helping to ensure effective overall positioning of AFMO before the public and within its field.
• Oversee the design, implementation, and management of a campaign to establish AFMO’s brand recognition, visibility, and marketing efforts.
• Serve as an ambassador and spokesperson for the organization and articulate the mission to external constituents.
• Be the champion across the organization for revenue-centric strategies and work with the Team to understand revenue impacts of current and proposed programmatic strategies.
• Lead the use of public relations, community outreach, publications, and other marketing tools to promote growth in visibility, revenue, and engagement.
• Evaluate and drive the use of new technology funding vehicles including social media and eGiving, revamping the organization's online tools for supporters.
• Ensure that internal communications among staff and leadership is timely and appropriate.
• Work with team to continually evolve both messages and strategies to publicize AFMO/Migdal Ohr’s mission and programs.
• Serve as a primary spokesperson in the US on behalf of AFMO.

Portfolio Management
• Maintain a significant portfolio of principal gift donors while facilitating relationships between donors and the Board and staff. Personally cultivate and solicit high level gifts from a portfolio of current and prospective donors.
• Systematically identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward new individual and institutional donors capable of making significant contributions to AFMO. Educate targeted donors on AFMO’s mission, programs, and projects, and develop specific strategies and tailored cases for support.
• Maintain existing donor relationships and deepen those alliances through regular, relevant communication and stewardship.

Board Development
• Provide professional leadership and support to the Executive Committee and Board.
• Organize the work of the Board and committees to ensure that participation is meaningful and productive.
• Ensure timely and detailed communications and reporting to the Board.
• Work with leadership to cultivate and recruit new board members.
• Provide leadership and support on all issues of governance, compliance, organization policy and accountability.

Talent Management and Team-Building
• Recruit and deploy professional staff as required by strategic plans and provided for in operating budget.
• Maintain a flexible leadership style that empowers staff through active communication and delegation and promotes teamwork.
• Foster an environment of achievement and ensure staff accountability for excellence through clearly defined and measurable goals.
• Create a climate that promotes respect for others and acceptance of alternative ideas and approaches, as well as the highest ethical standards and practices.
• Provide staff development and training opportunities.
• Oversee the development of a human resources program that professionalizes job descriptions, policies, performance evaluations, compensation, and other best practices.

Liaison with MDA- Israel
• Serve as the primary liaison with Migdal Ohr in Israel.
• Work to establish open communication with the Migdal Ohr leadership, especially about funding needs, new projects, reporting on ongoing funded projects, public relations materials, and donor proposals and visits.


Qualifications



The ideal candidate will possess outstanding strategic thinking and communication skills as well as a strong conceptual understanding of the organization’s mission and impact. S/he will have experience in building a collaborative work environment.

For this critical role, the American Friends of Migdal Ohr seeks a seasoned executive capable of clearly articulating the case for AFMO and raising both private and institutional funds to further the organization’s mission and values. The new Chief Executive Officer must be a persuasive communicator and excellent team player and builder. S/he must have a demonstrable and authentic commitment to the mission and strategic goals of AFMO.

• An established leader with at least 10 years of demonstrated success in a senior management position, preferably with a nonprofit organization.
• Well-honed strategic and business planning skills and experience necessary to implement strategic long-range and short-term plans.
• Demonstrable achievements in personal fundraising, and broad knowledge of all areas of fundraising including individual major and planned giving, events, direct mail, and foundation support.
• Experience in leading an organization through change
• Ability to serve as a strong and effective advocate for AFMO with volunteers, community leaders, and prospective donors.
• Creative, innovative, entrepreneurial, and strategic inclinations.
• Proven track record in creating diverse and successful fund development initiatives, including individual and institutional philanthropy, in such a way that has been a major step up.
• Proven ability to personally develop strategies, cultivate, solicit, and steward major and institutional donors at significant six- and seven-figure levels. The ability to inspire high-net worth individuals and major foundations to financial leadership.
• Demonstrated experience training and working with staff and board members in development-related activities, providing them with quality support and intelligence, and increasing their comfort with and success in fundraising.
• Success in increasing the effectiveness of development staff through established objectives, performance standards and quantifiable benchmarks.
• Strong interpersonal skills with the intellectual and emotional depth, maturity, and collaborative skills to work effectively across the entire organization and all levels.
• A diplomatic problem solver able to build consensus and engender cooperation between lay leaders and professionals from the breadth of interests and perspectives in the community.
• Strong written and oral communication and flexibility to work in an active work environment.
• Strong management skills, both strategic and operational, and a demonstrated ability to build, manage, mentor, and motivate an effective team.
• A strong work ethic, ability to maintain and model high personal, ethical, and professional standards, as well as an outgoing and positive personality. A sense of humor and perspective.
• Ability and desire to work as part of a warm, compassionate, and empathetic team.
• Familiarity with Israel and Jewish community structures and institutions; understanding of, and sensitivity to, the Orthodox community desirable
• Experience in working with Israelis and Israel-based professionals would be an advantage.
• A Bachelor’s degree is required; an advanced degree is preferred.
