• Health: Significantly reduce exposures to chemical pollutants in consumer products as well as air and water pollution from fossil fuels, including oil and gas operations and coal-fired power plants.

Environmental Defense Fund is hiring a Campaign Director who will be responsible for leading the planning and execution of a comprehensive development campaign that secures funding from individuals and foundations. S/he will play a vital leadership role for the $1 billion campaign to fund EDF’s five-year Strategic Plan (Blueprint 2020) as well as create a pipeline of new donors to take fundraising to a new level. This is a senior executive position reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer and working closely with the other Vice Presidents in the organization, including Membership and marketing.

The Campaign Director will be responsible for managing all administrative and strategic aspects of the campaign, which includes the campaign timeline, pipeline development, financial reports, volunteer management, donor capacity analysis, communication materials and campaign events. S/he will have the ability to think creatively about how to reach new donor demographics and engage with new audiences.



• Lead, plan, oversee and execute the overall strategy of the $1B fundraising campaign.
• Serve as a member of the Development Leadership Team and manage the events team of six.
• Work closely with the director of donor communications on campaign-specific communications and their dissemination, written and video material, and online communications for donors and prospective donors.
• In collaboration with prospect managers, oversee assignments to campaign volunteers (trustees and donors) and track and report progress.
• Manage and staff the Trustee Leadership Gifts Committee and potentially other volunteer committees, set agenda, track and report on results.
• Determine agendas for key campaign meetings with EDF executives and staff, trustees, and donors.
• Develop pipeline building strategy and events, oversee execution, and track results.
• Working with the research and database departments, create campaign reporting tools in order to track progress and institute campaign metrics.
• Coordinates with the director of events management on all campaign events.
• Work with Chief Development Officer on strategy and staffing of fundraising activities outside the US, including but not limited to Europe and UK, China, the Asia-Pacific region.
• May manage a small portfolio of donors and prospective donors.


The ideal candidate will possess outstanding strategic thinking and communication skills as well as the ability to be creative and flexible. This individual will have campaign experience in a collaborative work environment, and must be comfortable in working across a large, complex organization. The candidate must be results-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced, competitive environment. The ideal candidate should have experience working for a national/international organization with a central headquarters and regional offices. Experience with an environmental or conservation institution is preferred, but not required.

• Bachelor’s degree required, advanced degree preferred.
• Passion for the mission of the Environmental Defense Fund.
• Minimum of ten (10) years of nonprofit fundraising experience.
• Proven success in creating a campaign strategy and timeline and then executing the plan to completion.
• Major gift fundraising background with campaign experience preferred.
• Must have proven leadership and a track record of success in building a pipeline of donors.
• Must be creative with high energy and a flexible personality to work effectively with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse environment.
• Proven track record of successful fundraising in a metrics-based development operation.
• Demonstrated success in personally cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts and the ability to understand how donors think about giving.
• Experience identifying, developing and managing volunteers.
• Ability to think creatively with a persuasive and diplomatic style.
• Ability to travel domestically and internationally as needed.
