Background

The mission of Family and Children’s Association is to protect children, help individuals and families and strengthen communities by offering assistance to those who are experiencing social, emotional or economic difficulties.

Family and Children’s Association reaches out to the most vulnerable members of society. Its comprehensive and integrated services range from early childhood interventions to services for senior citizens – all designed to encourage self-sufficiency. Services are segmented into four areas: Prevention and Family Support, Behavioral Health Treatment, Residential and Youth Development and Senior Services. With approximately forty programs and seventeen locations, Family and Children’s Association is Long Island’s human service network. The organization is committed to providing caring, professional services through a continuum of residential, in-home and community-based programs, which are individualized, strength-based and culturally competent.

Through the Association’s commitment to advocacy, it strives to obtain services required by each client, to work to influence public policy, and to respond to unmet needs by developing innovative programs that are both effective and efficient.

Family and Children’s Association is the result of a merger in 1998 between Children’s House and Family Service Association, organizations that had been serving Nassau and Suffolk counties since 1884. The success of the merged agencies depended on blending the services and personnel of two strong agencies into one finely tuned system of care. Seeking accreditation was a way of ensuring quality as the merged associations created their own culture. COA accreditation attests that Family and Children’s Association meets the highest national standards and is delivering the best quality services to the community it serves.

400 employees and 225 volunteers help nearly 25,000 people every year. The budget for 2010 is $25 million. To learn more about Family and Children’s Association visit their web site at www.familyandchildrens.org.
